Is it good to mix briquettes and lump or just one or the other by itself? Does one produce more heat? Which one will give you a longer cook time?

I mix once in a while. When I do I fill the basked 3/4 full of briquettes and then the lump goes on top. Lump usually burns hotter, has less ash and doesn't last as long. That's why I put it on top. Gets the cooker up to temp faster and the ash doesn't smother the briquettes underneath it. Prolly doesn't make a hoot of difference but it makes me feel "smart". Cheers!!!

In general briquettes will give you a longer burn. If you get a good quality lump it will burn just as long. There is no "one " answer to your question. Lump burns hotter and produces less ash and is cleaner. Briquettes will burn more consistent and sometimes easier for some to control temps with, but most have binder and fillers which creates excess ash. Everybody has their favorite kind whether it is a lump or briquettes. I use RO lump in my gravity fed cooker and Walmart brand briquettes in my UDS. Only because one kind burns better in each cooker. Try some different kinds to find out what you like best in your cookers. Remember, they're no rules here, it's just bbq.
