Default First UDS Build

Hello,
New member, first post. I just started my first UDS build and have a question. I want to try and use the lid from the sealed barrel. I cut it off about an inch and a half from the top(see pic) So I was thinking of welding a 2 inch strap on the inside of the barrel leaving about an inch exposed then I can slide the lid down in. Do you guys think this would be a good plan or should I just find a webber top and use it. Thanks for the input!

Either way. Weber lid will fit like you have it. Next time we're gonna need a better shot of your motorcycle with any barrel pics!

Wow great info, thanks! and yes I will just happen to include the newley built cycle with any barrel pics!. Was thinking I might rivet the strapping in position. Welding that thin metal is tough. Maybe a combination of both. Will let you k now how it goes. Thanks!

Ok so I riveted in some 2 inch strapping on the inside of the barrel. Worked great and the lid has a nice tight fit. More to come...

Argh, im late to the party, the strap is a very good idea, I would have put a gasket in it though. or come to think of it use high heat silicone around the outside edge. Good looking build i have a drum for my brothers, and i may go this route now.

It looks like you can use a weber lid too if you ever feel the urge.

Thanks everyone. Thanks cowgirl for the bike comment. Well I have progressed and have finished the build pretty much. I was lucky to score some heavy duty expanded metal from the local scrap yard. 20 cents per pound. Gotta love that. Anyway I did not re invent the wheel on this as I just learned from all the build post's etc... I burnt the barrel 3 times so I had to wire brush the inside to do a final clean. I welded a quick tool to help clean the inside of the barrel. See pic. Next I welded a basic charcoal basket and drip pan, put a slide vent in the front and added a 3/4 nipple vent in the back just in case. Welded a cool grate from the expanded metal too. I found this Ice Tea sign at the scrap yard and thought it looked cool. Quick coat of black paint and I am now ready for my first smoke this weekend. Oh and the bike made it in a picture or two. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!

Ok thanks everyone. Thanks for the tip Carbon! I completed my first smoke. Details and pics. 2 Boston Butts, Wally Worrld B &B lump charcoal, Hickory chunks. Started the smoker at 7am. Lit 10lbs of the lump with 6 lumps started in a chimney. Let it go for about 45 minutes until the thicker white smoke let up and the temp settled to about 230 or so. Very few ntake adjustments. When the smoke looked a light blue I put the meat on. Took meat out at 180 and wraped in foil. Finished to 210. Came out fantiastic for me anyway. Sorta light on the rub I thew together. And yes it freeking snowed in SC. I'm 50 minutes for the beach. Well the smpoking must go on. Thanks for all the ideas and support. You folks are wonderful. Later Mike
