Got this great tip from Alan N from Hong Kong.
As discussed in another thread, grilling on the SJG can get disappointing as the heat dies when you put the lid on (poor airflow / design). Alan advises closing one side vent, stacking the coals on that side then using a simple piece of foil over the open vent to guide airflow under the coals (you keep the lid vent open and above the coals). this is how it looked when set up ![]() after 2 hours with lid on ![]() This worked really well, I love grilling on the SJG, it's perfect for our family of 5. The coals lasted long enough for some teriyaki chicken tenders ![]() Then burgers after that ![]()

Thanks man, I'm considering buying a replacement vent for a SJS and mounting to the bottom of the SJG. See what that does.

I read about Alan's mod the other day. Now all I need is a SJG! Glad to see it worked for you.

this thing rocks! been grilling up a storm and just started using some lump charcoal which worked out great. I also ordered the SJS silver and ash pan which i am going to mount to the bottom & see how that goes. Be able to regulate "gold" for smoking and "silver" for grilling.

I have an old Smokey Joe, wood handle model. Same problem. Always had to leave the lid half cocked so it would vent better. If I didn't the coals would peter out. Well, one day I prolly had a couple too many & took a step drill bit to the lid. Four more "strategically" placed holes in the lid & a couple more in the bottom for good measure, problem solved! It's amazing how well these lil' buggers cook! Cheers!!!

one of the better designs was the older sj's that had three vents on the lower bowl that were under the charcoal grate. that to me is the best mod for the sjg. if i ever feel that i need to do a mod, that would be the one.
