I fill the basket with lump and wood chunks, place some lit coals on top and let it roll.

It depends on how hot your cooking. I burn all Lump and and I use a 1/2 chimney of HEB briquettes to get it going( consistency is Key to a no head ache fire up) I do butts at 300 I'll use about 3 lb on a 9 lb butt done in 7 hrs.
