When it's 95+ degrees outside and 100% humidity, you decide of all the options in life that your best best is to stand around a fire for the weekend.

Not even close. Learning new things every time I put match to wood. I think it will be that way for as long as I keep cooking over wood etc.

As my signature indicates, some day i will be (if I live long enough). I think others in this thread have said, you can not really be a pitmaster unless you can take any cut of meat on any cooker in any conditions and cook it to perfection without fail. I have also stood with many of the greats. I have even beaten some of them in contests but in my mind, that does not make me a pitmaster. If I were to challenge them tomorrow and could not beat them again. When I stand leader of the BBQ greats time and time again and they call me a pit master......I guess I would be one
will be a Pit Master someday

Well I am master of my domain. However, I am am not a Pitmaster . I am always trying to improve my cooking and able to compensate for issues. During a recent cook it was 20-30 degrees outside and the turkey breast was not going to make it in the WSM mini even with the blanket. Moved to the oven and we had the best smoked turkey ( first try) we have had. The family always says my Q is better than any resteraunt.

I am very critical of my cooking. Always looking for comments for improvement. Usually don't get any from the friends and family.

Nope !! The rules say that you can't be "The sauce whisperer" and pitmaster at the same time. Never really thought much of "Tags". I just do what I do and do my best each time out.

I would say from personal experience that you're at very least WELL on your way if not already there, wherever there is....

Rare is a "pitmaster" that hasnt ruined more meat than he/she cares to think about...

Lake Sinclair, GA (strategically about an hour from darn near anywhere)
Started competing in chili cookoffs back in the 1990's and have competed in more than I care to count. I became a CBJ in MiM in 2005, then MBN and in GBA in 2010. I've probably judged 130+- BBQ comps (sanctioned and unsanctioned) over this time. That said, I really enjoy competing more than I enjoy judging, and hope to get back to doing 4 or 5 a year in the near future.

Not sure I'll ever call myself a 'Pit Master'.
I've mastered several kinds of pits, but I haven't worked with a few enough to include myself in that category.
I've been helping or BBQing for more than 50 yrs. Some days I'm the Master, some days I come up a little short of perfection...
I've never been interested in entering a BBQ comp. but I enjoy watching others. I've stolen lots of great ideas watching others BBQ.
I can say the same thing about stealing ideas on BBQ Brethren.
I just can't take credit for stealing your ideas.
