So im hosting my 3rd annual pre-thanksgiving turkey fry and need an answer to a UDS question. Im planning on making a bird in the UDS as well as a deep fried one. Because this event takes place outside and its getting quite chilly in Cleveland, OH, I was thinking of making a fire inside the UDS once the turkey is finished for people to warm up. Do i need to remove the thermometer before doing so? Will it harm anything? Any answers would be appreciated.

Seems to me it depends on how hot the fire is and how high the thermometer reads.
In general, I would assume the fire is going to be hotter than the thermometer will read and I would remove it for fear of damaging it. Whatever you've painted your UDS with may be in jeopardy too, but a nice warm fire on a chilly day is a lot of fun. |

Personally I wouldn't do it. Your gonna burn your UDS to hell and back, ruin the season, the paint, and, if you don't remove it, your thermo. Get another drum or a metal garbage can and make a burn barrel out of that.
