Default Hawgin on Lanier - Gainesville, GA - Pics and judge report

This was a first year KCBS contest in Gainesville, GA on the shores of Lake Lanier just 30 minutes northeast of Atlanta.

The Jaycees talked the county into grading a large lot, adding power and water, just to hold this contest and maybe other events. Wow!

Judge Report


We had 8 tables of judges. There were 3 first time judges and 2 that had less than 5 contests. The rep made sure they were not all sitting at the same table. We also had a fair amount of master judges that they were spread out too.


I got to be a table captain which I like to do as I can see the scores that the 6 judges gave at my table.

Chicken – 6 entries…all were bone in with skin on thighs. 5 of the boxes presented 6 thighs and 1 had 7 samples. Judges stated that 2 had bite through skin. One entry looked charred and had a strange metallic taste.


I checked with the other tables and there were a total of 3 leg entries and 2 breast entries. One of the breast entries was a breast fillet that was rolled up and cooked in a muffin pan. That was a new one for me!


Ribs – 6 entries…all spares. 2 boxes presented as 4 over 4 bones…1 box was 3 over 3 bones…one box was 4 bones in line with a bone at the top and one at the bottom. 2 boxes were 6 bones in line.
All samples were very good with a low score of 7 and the rest 8’s and 9’s.


Pork – 6 entries. All boxes had money muscle with pulled or chunks. Only 2 tasted of pork and scored VERY high. The other entries were given mostly 6’s and I think the judges were being generous.


Brisket – 6 entries. 5 boxes had 7 or more slices but one box had only 6. 3 entries had burnt ends. The 2 burnt ends I tried were awesome and helped the taste scores.


Overall impression from this table was that most entries were above average.


Another great contest with a great location. I'll be back next year.

Dave,
It was nice to meet you (albiet while chasing my twin girls down on thier bikes!!). We are probably going to be moving the event up into Middle of May for 2013 to get a little warmer weather. Overall I think all of the teams had a good time...we are looking forward to 2013!!!! Thanks again for this coverage!

Good to meet you too! Warmer weather may increase your spectator attendance but the event site was perfect for the fall leaf color!

You, Ryan, and the other Jaycees did a great job and we can't wait for another great contest next year.
