Judge Report
There were 25 teams competing so we had 4 tables of 6 judges. This means that for each meat one table will get 7 entries instead of 6. We had 3 first time judges and the rep made sure that they were not all sitting at the same table. Also had at least 2 master judges at each table and one got 3 masters. In past contests this year the ladies were spread out equally but I guess someone complained to the board about that so it was not done so table 1 had 5 ladies (not saying thats good or bad..just reporting it) I got to table captain which I like to do because then I can lead the discussion about what the judges liked after the scoring. I also get to see the scores from each judge. There was also a husband/wife cook team judging this time. I meant to mention this last week at Duluth that there were at least 4 cooks I recognized who were judging. Cooks - If you want to know what the judges are looking for...get certified and then go judge! Chicken 6 entries - 5 were thighs and 1 was legs. (I polled the other tables and we had a total of 6 leg entries from 25 teams) Thighs were split ..3 had skin and 2 did not. All looked great in the boxes with even brown color. Scores were high for all entries. I got to try the leg (thank you for putting more than 6 of them in the box) and a thigh. I thought they were both fantastic. Some of our discussion centered around a heavily sauced entry but overall all 6 were pretty good. Ribs If you have read a few of my reports in the past you'll know that we are seeing ribs presented bones over bones, bones in line, bones inline with one in the front or back, 4 bones that make a frame...etc. I think we had a box of each style yesterday! They all looked great but scores were all over the place. No clear favorite with different judges liking different entries for different reasons. Here is the answer to the cooks who ask "How can I get 7's, 8's, and 9's?"....humans don't all like the same things. Pork 6 entries. One was money muscle+chunks+pulled...two were MM+pulled, two were MM+chunks, One was pulled +what looked like burnt ends. I got to try something from each box. All were good but one stood out with a great pork flavor and another with strong smoke. All scored high. Brisket Here's the deal...many judges don't look forward to brisket because many, many times...the entries are not as good as the other 3 meats. So....we get 7 entries this time. ![]() Well we we shocked that all 7 were great! All had excellent flavor and tenderness while 2 were the best I have ever tasted. So this was a great little contest that I hope I can judge again or maybe compete in next year. Next week...Cleveland, GA. See ya then!

We competed against Git-r-smoked on Saturday in Jesup. That means they drove that monster toy hauler 6 hours Saturday night to compete in Dalton (and do pretty well based on the results)! That's dedication!
