Default Some "Firsts" From Over the Weekend

Figured I would share a couple "firsts" that happened over the weekend. We've been competing a good bit this year and I've been working pretty hard on making our food better. Oddly enough over the last 4-5 competitions the practice and learning has seemed to be paying off.

So we were at the Atlanta BBQ Festival this last weekend. Had a great time. Quick shout out to The Pig Lebowski boys for hosting a great Friday night . Nothing really out of the ordinary "cook wise" occurred over the 2 days in terms of food not being on time or missing anything. Thought our pork was our best category followed by ribs. But here are the firsts.......

First was getting our first call up for desert. My GF wanted to start doing desert since we never turn anything in as I'm not a great sweets maker. I of course told her to make whatever she wanted. She got 2nd place on only her 2nd event doing desert. Yes it was cheesecake. A magical one at that.

Next first was something I have been looking for all season and the biggest first of the weekend. Finally got our first 1st place category pro call! The Ribs were much better than our Pork apparently. The first 2 backyard events we did this year got a 1st place ribs followed by 1st place chicken, but this was the first time getting it with the Pro's. Last year I wouldn't have fathomed being able to do better in a category than the entire field, but then after seeing our food could be good I knew it was just a matter of time.........just not sure when that time would be.

Obligatory Trophy Pose

Ribs at some part of the cooking process.

The next first relates to the ribs and it was getting our first score over 175 in a category. Almost had it the competition prior in chicken, but was just a number I personally had in my head that I wanted to exceed. Ribs were 178.2858. Had a few rogue 8's in the scores .

Last first was our first comment card of the year.......and it was a positive card! Got a 9,9,9 from the judge with some good feedback that they liked our "spicy" sauce. What sucks is they didn't put the category down that it was for . Since we got a 9,9,9 out of at least one judge for each category I'm not 100% what they were talking about. I mean of course I have an idea of which one I think, but really only have it narrowed down to 2 categories. Thought it was cool though either way. I guess the sauce was so perfectly spicy it lowered their focus for a short period of time.

Last thing isn't a first, but even earlier in the year when we weren't sure exactly which direction to improve flavors I always thought appearance could be improved. Even if you taste the food and it is a complete dumpster fire you can still make it look pretty. This was probably our best event to date for appearance scores (I'd have to look back over all scores to confirm) as we only had three 8's total for all categories.

Anyways, thanks for reading. I'm also working on a blog I hope to have out within a week or two documenting each contest. We have done 9 so far this year with 6 more signed up for the rest of the year and 2 more pending signup. So hope to improve more.

Next first on the goal list is a RGC or jumping straight to GC........

Started competing in chili cookoffs back in the 1990's and have competed in more than I care to count. I became a CBJ in MiM in 2005, then MBN and in GBA in 2010. I've probably judged 130+- BBQ comps (sanctioned and unsanctioned) over this time. That said, I really enjoy competing more than I enjoy judging, and hope to get back to doing 4 or 5 a year in the near future.
