Default "Allergic" to grilled/smoked meats?

My wife, bless her heart, loves meats grills over charcoal or smoked. However, she (and both my in-laws) get serious indegestion from using charcoal or smoking meats. They call it an "allergy". Do not get the same result from using gas or the oven.

Thoughts? I hate to quit smoking.

Instead of antacids, try a shot of good apple cider vinegar. May sound crazy, but you would be surprised.

You might look at getting a pellet grill.

Yep. Bragg's organic apple cider vinegar. A shot in the morning mixed with a little pure aloe juice every morning pretty much took care of Redhot's reflux problem.

I doubt it is an allergy, but, that can be tested. It is probably just a senstive tummy, the vinegar does work great. Does it occur with any charred meat? Or specifically smoked meat? There are compounds from smoke that could be the problem, in which case, you have to look at reducing smoke exposure.

I have to add, when someone smokes with a heavy smoke, especially hickory, I get heart burn and an upset stomach, it is as sure as tastebuds, an indicator for me that the smoke was too heavily applied. Not that I am saying you are doing a bad job, but, it might just be too much for them.

I have the same issue. Couple hours after eating foods with a fairly heavy level of smoke, I'm burping up the smoke flavor and generally not happy. Best remedy I've found is a half teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in a glass of water, then a tablespoon or so of cider vinegar poured in. Do this over the sink, as it can fizz over. Down it and within seconds the discomfort is gone. If you get the mixture right, there is almost no flavor, and it's really the best antacid I've used. I learned this from my grandmother, who was all about homemade things rather than store bought. My wife calls it "fake alka seltzer".

I use baking soda as an antacid as well. I'll have to try the vinegar mod next time. Thanks!

I know it sounds weird but if you try it and it doesn't work you can call me a liar... a spoon full of yellow mustard works for me every time. I haven't taken an antacid in 10 years!! Try burning a cleaner fire as well. Many people can't take a heavu smoke on their food.
