Default What makes a good TD entry?

I am new to the TD's, so I wanted some opinions to help ALL the Newbs. So what is the primary criteria for the TD's? Is it the recipe, detailed info, meat selection, plating, photo, or artistic direction? Just want to make sure all us Noobians are on the right track to BEAT all the Vets.

When it comes right down to it, I'd have to say that it is luck.

Having a very good Photo helps and Bribing the Organizer may help too.

It could be any of those. There are no rules for voting. People vote for the dish they like best, whatever aspects those may be.

My advice, besides a tasty looking photo, is to describe how you made it, with a few photos along the way to help build up the dish in the mind of the reader, capped off with the final presentation photo to drive the whole thing home.

For those who can't read however, I think they go by the prettiest picture I would imagine.

I look for something that is creative, fits the theme, and makes me want to lick my display :)

I always look for creativity first. If something hits me over the head, is creative AND something I want to try, that is big on my scorecard. There are some things I try to avoid. A grilled steak, for instance. It might be perfect, but it doesn't inspire me unless there is something unique about it. I also try to imagine flavors and textures. Photography is quite a ways down on my list. Sometimes, though, it is just something I want to eat. Everyone is different.

Effort.

Yeah, to some degree it is luck, or a good photograph, or just some food that a lot of people like.

But, in the long run, I see this one trend -- the entrant that puts the most effort into a TD entry often wins, even though other entrants may post a prettier picture.

Win or lose, I try to submit entries that I've worked hard to make competitive. Sometimes it gets me a win, and many times it doesn't -- sometimes it results in zero votes, which is a reward in itself, and a weird kind of way.

Bottom line, dig deep and aim to cook something excellent. Win or lose, you will at least eat well.

I can't believe nobody mentioned SPAM yet. Maybe that is just too obvious.

Try not to get soused and burn your entry... That did work for me once, but only with some serious photoshopping..

Another thing is being spontaneous. Just take pics of everything without expecting a result. Most TD's I've won have been a complete surprise. Everytime I thought I was guaranteed a win, I got Schooled by a Newb... or CD, or Gore.

But above all. Just have FUN!

Cheers!

Bill

Oh, I also forgot to add that two things that will always get a lot of votes and usually win are fried food and food with gravy. It used to be that way with steaks and fatties, but they appear to be passe now.

I don't think there is a real pattern, there is no one thing. I have been beaten with a great entry on my part, and I have lost with an even better entry on my part, sometimes even a fabulous entry on my part has been beaten.

I often vote for what looks delicious, and it might just be a great cook of ribs or brisket. You just need to enter and see.

To me, it's kinda crazy that a BBQ site does Throw Downs via the internet. The worse looking entry can be some of the best food you have ever tasted.

Since 4 of the 5 senses are not in play, it's visual and imagination (a fantasy bite if you will). Therefore, I've tried to focus on the pictures and prep.

These folks are Good! And they have seen a lot. Therefore it's takes a lot of effort to impress the voters.

In my short time among the Brethren I've learned Scads just from reading and watching these posts.

The photography tips thread was a huge help but most of all I'm seeing Originality Counts.

Thanks all, as I have only been in 1 TD and only on the site for a short time. I am a VERY competitive individual and have already learned a lot. I now know what I must do to take down the veterans and then become one myself.

Again thanks all

Take it from me, and I got one vote with two entries so I know what I'm talking about...it comes down to voting by drunk whackadoodles.
Nothing else will help you, it is just whatever finger hits whichever key at the time.

This is an excellent point. If you happen to be sandwiched between two strong entries, you'll probably capture 50% of the "too drunk to hit the right bubble" vote and will probably win.
