Default Hello from Shoreham-by-Sea (UK)

Well where do I start, moved from 1 bed basement flat with no garden to a 3 bed house on the south coast with garden about 2.5 years ago. Decided I wanted to cook outdoors and surf (but the surfings another story!). Bought a Weber One-Touch Platinum (57cm) charcoal Kettle.

Started maranating and making sauces and cooking meat directly but my style soon changed over to indirect hot smoking of various food stuffs (with/without sauces, rubs, glazes, etc).

This shift had mainly occured after reading the Dinosaur Barbecue cookbook and then BBQ USA (Steven Raichlen) from cover to cover!!! And I've cooked nearly all the Dino recipes and at least 25 recipes from the USA book. (Holiday's in Sugarloaf also has a lot to answer for - mainly my love of Beans!!!)

I'm now looking at purchasing a dedicated smoker as keeping the Weber loaded up and at a stedy low temp for 6hours+ is hard work. I can't believe how lucky you guys are with a) meat prices and cuts and b) smoker prices and choice. (You can at least double the US price for the equiv pit in the UK). Going into a UK butcher with a description of a US style cut and asking them to reproduce it makes them smile, ie Ribs here have very little meat as they are mainly a by product of selling belly, so asking for the whole rack but remove the belly skin and fat normally gets the required cut (but fills the freezer to the amusment of the other half!)

Well I'll prob post in the other part of the forums soon as I'm not sure which smoker to go for, I've narrowed it down to either the Brinkmann Vertical Smoker (http://www.brinkmannsmokers.co.uk/vertical_smoker.htm) [I'd love a smoke king deluxe but at $850 its a bit beyond my grasp!!] or the Weber Bullet (but then loading it looks awkward compared with the Brink Vert).

Thanks for reading my ramblings.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

Sounds like you need to hook up with a local metal shop and convince them they "need" a project! :D

As you've probably noticed, our bunch has just about every cooker or contraption known to the bbq world. And, typical of colonialists, we've got opinions about everything! :D

For example: if you normally cook for one or two people the WSM is really hard to beat. Well built, easy to clean, and maintains the temperature almost as if it has a thermostat (which, actually, can be added!). http://www.thebbqguru.com/

Did I just see $850 for a smoke king deluxe? Holy brinkman batman! At the current prices, we will be able to trade u a gallon of gas for that though.

Unless your really lookig for high volume, the Weber bullet is a great smoker for a family, You can easily cook for 6-8 on it. And if its a more reasonable price, i'd reconsider that options. Loading isnt that bad. If you dont want to load from the top, both racks come out, load the rack, and put it back in. Loading was never a problem i have heard someone mention.

Welcome to our side of the atlantic. Enjoy!!!

Check out www.virtualweberbullet.com for lots of info about the Weber Smokey Mountain - good "user" site for this often misunderstood cooker. :D
