Default Peoples Choice advice

A comp that I'm entered in at the end of May is having a voluntary "peoples choice" category. They are requesting 300 samples from each entrant and will rebate $50.00 to each participant to help cover the cost. The organizer has asked me for some input on how to do this, and frankly, I'm at a bit of a loss. For that many samples I'm thinking of 1oz portions of pulled pork would be the easiest to assemble while doing all of the other tasks of comp prep.Please help me out.

$50 isn't really worth the effort to divide your attention from the competition. People's Choice in California works like this:

1. You cook the meat (or just save your competition leftovers)
2. Spectators buy tickets or books of tickets (Usually around $10 for 5 tickets plus one different colored ticket for voting for their favorite)
3. Spectators get 1 2oz. sample per ticket.
4. Teams get a percentage of the tickets they turn in. (Anywhere from a 50-50 to an 80-20 split)
5. Team with the most favorite tickets gets a trophy.

We have only done two People's Choice contests, but we won both of them. It all depends on how badly you want to win it. The last time, I cooked six butts on my drum, and bought several 36 count bags of yeast rolls from Sam's and we made mini sandwiches.

But Bigmista is correct. $50 will not be enough to offset the cost, as well as compensate you for your divided attention. As I said though, it all depends on how badly you want that trophy.

I honestly believe that the only reason that we won the two that we did, is that we weren't up against anyone with deep pockets. I personally witnessed two members of a team take over $100 each out of their wallets, and put it in the jar. On one hand the money was all going to charity, but on the other it cheapened the idea of having a contest.

Here in the South, People's Choice is typically seen as a give-back to the organizers to give them the opportunity to make some money and make the public happy. Nobody really views it as a serious competition, so it's all about whatever you can do with the least amount of effort and lowest cost. Often the organizer supplies a couple butts to encourage participation.

Fifty bucks would just about cover your meat cost as long as you don't have to serve the samples - i.e. just provide a couple pans of pulled pork. If they are expecting you to hand out the samples yourself, it would be more trouble and cost than I would choose to go to.

As an organizer, I've found the key to getting teams to participate in PC is to structure things so that the teams must provide the least amount of work and cost possible. Since everyone expects winning to be totally unlikely no matter what you turn in, offering prize money is no real incentive.

Added: Oh, and Q-Dat is correct. When PC is not structured for blind voting, organizers encourage the public, the teams themselves, friends and sponsors to "vote early and often". It is common when judging is not blind for the local restaurant/lodge/etc to win because their jar is stuffed with money. That's why it's important to understand how the PC will be run and choose to particpate (or not) accordingly.
