Default Arizona Has a New Team of the Year Award Program

The Grand Canyon Cup and The Copper Star are Arizona's New Team of the Year Awards! They are annual points races which are broken into two separate divisions with the intent being to honor both the hardcore competition teams as well as the more casual teams because a team can only win awards in one division, not both.

The Grand Canyon Cup will use a team's 6 best scores in the Overall and 4 individual meat categories at all KCBS sanctioned contests held within Arizona in a calendar year.

The Copper Star will use a team's 3 best scores in the Overall and 4 individual meat categories with the caveat that the team can only cook up to 5 contests during that year.

You can learn more about this program by following these links:

* Program Overview
* Complete Program Rules
* Current List of Qualifying Events

Good Luck and may the best teams win!

I really like the criteria for the awards Vince.

But.

Shouldn't you have one for those teams that enter two contests a year and finish right in the middle in them? Call it the "prickly pear". I think that is a ToY that I have a shot at.

Seriously, nice job.

Well I guess there is no reason for Ca. or any other bordering states to cook these events. However, you are all still welcome to join CBBQA and join our TOY race.

Sure there is, Tom: To win prize money, event trophies, earn Jack and Royal qualifiers. Lot's of good reasons to come!

The reason we're making this an Arizona exclusive this season is to give this program a really strong identity among the Arizona teams. Eligibility requirements are likely to change in the future.

Hope you're doing well these days. I still remember how unfortunate it was that you got sick at Mesquite last year. I had a similar experience at Dana Point. It was miserable!

See you down the road somewhere, maybe in Arizona!

Not to hijack, but it was already brought up, do other states allow non-resident teams to compete for that state's TOY? I would think that the state would want to reserve that for local teams only. Like RNQ said though, other teams can still compete...why wouldn't you make it locals only? Does the US Army award Medals of Honor to officers from other armies? Do colleges award a valadictorian honor on other schools graduates? Just seems natural to me.

The only state ToY race I have experience with directly is California, which in recent years has been open to out of state teams ... but in the not too distant past, was limited to in-state teams only. It made sense then, in the fledgling days of the BBQ competition landscape there, just as it does in Arizona during this inaugural year.

The first qualifying event of the Grand Canyon Cup and Copper Star season is underway at the "BBQ Cook-Off for Pan Can 2012" in Mesa, AZ and the second qualifying event is next weekend at the Lake Havasu Music, Brews and BBQ in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

Good luck to all the teams competing in this new Arizona Team of the Year awards program! It should be a lot of fun!
