PNWBA has sanctioned events in Western Canada.

Danielle (DivaQ) can probably hip you to your area, but there are regional organizations and people involved that can help Canadian teams or events get started.

Angie Qualle is bringing it home! Cook and Event organizer extrordinaire!

And Rob Rheinhart and Smokin' Jim are Brethren and have a great site:

Now get started!

Hi,

A lot of what you need will be determined by who is running the competition you are entering and what the categories are.

For example, if it's a 'backyard contest', they may allow propane grills. If it's a one day affair, you may not need overnight accessories.

In general, you need a smoker or two (depending on how much you need to cook), some tables for prep work, coolers for the meat, your ingredients, fuel, utensils, a tent to work under, thermometers to check temps, extension cords, hoses, 3 basins for wash stations, a fire extinguisher, a camp chair or two, food and drink for yourself, food prep gloves, knives, cutting boards, first aid kit, aluminum pans, tinfoil, a newspaper for down time, garbage bags and bug spray.

You can google various sanctioning bodies and check their sites for upcoming events in your area.

Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions! I'm sure you'll enjoy competing once you try it once or twice.

Eric

Hey there. In Nova Scotia there are currently no sanctioned contests that i know of. You may need to travel south to the USA or come on over to Ontario for the couple we have.
the KCBS listings for competitions can be found here www.kcbs.us

On the western side of Canada there is a fantastic organizing body the PNWBA http://www.pnwba.com/ they do an excellent job!!

Currently in Canada we run with everything from ECB's to WSM's to jambos and personally I run with an Onyx Oven a weber performer and a couple of traegers. You can use anything you want as long as it falls under the acceptable cooking methods by whatever sanctioning body is running the contests.

As for equipment checklists there are some great threads right here on the Brethren and sample boxes for you to take a look at plus their FAQ's :

If I can help in any way shoot me a DM. Best of luck to you on the competition trail!
