Fruit Wood

I was wondering where I was going to get a stash of fruit wood for my new smoker. I have plenty of alder and a bit of mayple but I want to try something different. I put an add up on www.craigslist.com this afternoon and have already gotten two offers of free wood. One fella has a small cherry tree and a small apple tree he wants removed and another has a pile of apple tree limbs to dispose of. What a great resource Craig's list is.

Living in Washington state you should have no problem finding fruitwood. Every orchard farmer has to prune his trees every year and occasionally replace whole orchards. Just drive around and when you see an orchard full of bulldozed over trees stop and ask if you can cut up a few and take the wood. I've never been turned down yet. Then smoke a pork butt and take it to the farmer as a thank you and you'll have a free source for fruit wood for life.

Unfortunatly that's eastern Washington and I never get over there. I have and eye for free wood so it shouldn't be a problem over here. Just no orchards. Too bad we can't swap wood like we do sauces. I'd love to have some pecan or walnut.
