There are lots of avocado trees where I live so I get the wood on occasion for my fire pit. Any one ever use it for smoking or grilling ? I always see cherry, pecan and apple wood chips and chunks for sale but thats it for fruit trees.

I found this list of woods that you can use. (GREAT INFO) Avocado wood is not on the list. So im thinking the answer is no.

No, the answer is yes. Avocado is a fruit. I'd love to have some available in my area.

Yes you can. I scored this trunk load for free of avocado wood back in May. I'm going to let it season for another 2 months. Can't wait to try it out.

http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq2/8.html Most of the BBQ forums and many websites use a copy of the original list, sometimes attributed to someone named Pat Lehnherr- http://www.eaglequest.com/~bbq/faq/8.html Glad to see that someone has backed it up on another site. That said, yes, many people use avocado with great success, one poster on another site reported that avocado reminded him of a mild hickory. |

Avocado wood is very oily and gives an acrid smoke. My family has an avocado grove and we used to burn the trim wood for heat when I was growing up. Be cautious trying to smoke with it, while I have never tried it myself and can't say authoritatively that it is unsuitable I'm not inclined to think it is.
Edit: I should add that there are a variety of species(Haas, Jollna, Fuerte, Bacon, etc) and one might work better than others.

It produces a very mild smoke taste; not my preference. However, you did say it was free.
