Default Need help identifying a "Kamado" type grill

Found a CL type ad for a "Japanese style grill that needs internal parts" is all it says.

Hopefully the picture is worth a thousand words and can point to the maker. And the final question, what would it be worth in current condition?

Thanks in advance.

You can buy a brand new tiled kamado ( see the internet site) that size for about $300. So an extrapolation based on the lack of parts and exterior design, I would pay about $75. Thats it.

You need measurements to see if BGE parts will work for you. Then price out the needed parts, and work backwards from the price of a new BGE. I got a new knock off from Menards for $500 that works great. If you're parting it together with BGE pieces you will exceed what I paid for a new grill. So, it depends what's missing without seeing the inside, already the damper, the cast iron vent on top, the feet or a stand, a new gasket, you gotta assume the grates, the cast iron part of the firebox. So you're out a couple hundred already to complete it. Maybe it's cool to have an old Kamado like having an old Camaro or something. But it probably won't be cheap.

Looks like it could be missing the damper top and the plug for the bottom draft as well. One question for the seller would be if the internal parts (firebox & firering in particular) are missing or inside and cracked/broken. If they're cracked or even in a few pieces they can be repaired. If they're completely missing I'd say pass on this and watch for others to pop up that include the internal parts.

As for identifying this kamado, the design on the imprint on the dome looks unusual. Usually they just have the japanese characters. You might check out the scans of old kamado manuals at the Naked Whiz's site here to determine the make. Maybe a Sakura is what I'm thinking.

I am not sure what kind that is, but my brother and I bought this one a few weeks ago for $130. Yours looks exactly like ours:

It was pretty old, but it looked like it only had about 10 or so cooks on it. I don't know if it was worth it or not, but I have been looking for two years, and this was the first one I have seen go up for sale.

This is a Hibachi Pot

And the style is an "Ancient Traditional" because of the "dog ear'' handles on the lid and the plug damper in the base. Originally they were rice cookers and they did not have the hinge. Its probably over 40 years old.

Determine what internal parts are missing and broken and we can give you a better idea on how to proceed.

What its worth in the current condition is whatever someone is willing to pay for it, but without knowing if BGE or Imperial Kamado is doing business in AUS and a supply of replacement parts are available, IMO its not worth much.

First off- if the bottom plug damper is missing, you can replace it with a Big Green Egg or Imperial Kamado slide draft door. Use a masonry drill bit for the mounting bolts.
You can also get a BGE DFMT or IK Top vent. Weber 18" cook grates fit most Large Kamados. A cast iron trivet or expanded metal can be used as a charcoal grate.

A few years ago someone in Australia responded to one of my posts and shared a pic of his sweet setup, 2 or 3 Imperial Kamados mounted on a table. He stated there were quite a few owners/users downunder. I sent him a PM and he never responded, maybe you might send a shout out?

I recently responded to a CL ad for a freebie Kamado. I removed the hinge and the lid collapsed into the base, it had been left uncovered for years and the internals were so fragile they turned to dust. It ended up in their recycle bin. You never can tell with these old claypots!

Keep us posted!

Thanks for that Brian and others! I think I will pass on this one then. I think it is too far gone, too expensive, and requiring too much attention.
