I have one of these that I got from Spicewine:
Amazon.com: 3 Inch Large Smoker Thermometer: Home & Garden@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41UChDDa-WL.@@AMEPARAM@@41UChDDa-WL The probe is like 3" long. It works fine. You just need to monitor the middle and then look at the side thermometer and learn the conversion factor. In my drum, it is like 20* diff without a diffuser, but with a 16" terracota pot diffuser it is often almost the same. But, it can shift back and forth between the center hotter and the edge. So....

Cooking on it was pretty sweet but noticed this sucker is going to consume a bit of fuel lol. Everything came out fantastic too. Having the room to set up zones is a huge plus. I still want a Weber Ranch though :) but this is working out just fine.
