Default UDG - In Progress

For the need to have a bigger grill. A friend of mine is currently helping us build a UDG. Here is what we have so far.

Will post more soon.

charcoal or gas? I'm in the process of designing a split charcoal/gas drum grill. Sure I could probably buy one more cheaply (time is money) but it looks fun to make. I picked up a couple wrecked grills for parts so I think the only real cost will be some sheet metal here and there, some bbq paint, and maybe a piano hinge or two.

Looks great so far. I am working on a similar build myself. 1 ? though. Where are you controlling the air intake? I have a couple of thoughts myself but see nothing in the pics.

I will have 3 vents on the bottom to control much like a Weber. One one each side and one in the middle. Yea we still have to make the vents. The vents wont be directly on the bottom but closer to the front.

Nice looking build. You'll find tons of that style grill in backyards all around Chicago but few as nice as yours. I cut my teeth cooking on one of those. The issue I always had with that style was too much air leaking in around the lid. Looks like you used angle iron around the lip of the lid? That will help. I'm very interested in seeing your vent set up once you get it done. Nice!

We did use angle on the top and bottom. It seals up really nice and is straight all around. I did grab some oven gasket just in case but we will see what happens after a burn out and a couple of uses if it stays that way.

So for venting we drilled out 5 holes and used pipe fittings. We have 3 in the back running along the drum. Then we have one one each side of the drum. Also keep in mind one side has the 3" hole still there as well. The reason why we went this route than making weber style venting was clean up. I didnt want ash to fall on the shelf underneath it and exit the drum. I wanted to be able to scoop the ash out of the bottom of the drum. Also living in the windy city is gets just that. Some of my webers will kcik up ash and soot on a good windy day so Im hoping this will keep that from happening as well. This all in theory of course and I havent fired it up as of yet and still need to do a nice burnout on it.

Here you can see the 3 vents running a long the back. Im hoping this will be enough airflow.

I have the option to open the smaller pipe fitting or open the 3" hole on the drum. Im hoping there is enough options to have some slight control.

So up next is to do a good burn out on this baby and season it up. Have to see how these air vents will work out for me. Will keep you guys posted on this.
