Default The Economist article on Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival

What do you think of this writer's portrayal of the competition BBQ community in North Carolina?

In particular, she calls the Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival "the leading barbecue event on the East Coast." Really? I don't live on the East Coast any more, but is this really the leading event?

Please discuss.

I will say it is the top in the state of NC. I also believe that the Festival of Discovery in Greenwood next weekend is the top in South Carolina and one of the top in the south. Of course I have only competed in NC, SC and GA.

It is a good size event but wouldn't say its the largest. They have great music their so the crowds are good. The competition is top shelf as well. I would say in is tops in North and maybe South Carolina. Obviously, MIM is huge and the contest in Vienna GA is bigger. It is definitely one I would enter except it falls either on my anniversary or wife's bday every year.

It probably depends on her definition of "East Coast", and my guess is that she doesn't consider GA part of it, because after The Royal, Memphis In May, and The Jack, probably 2 of the largest and fairly prestigious competitions would be the Big Pig Jig in Vienna and the National BBQ Festival in Douglas/Waycross. She didnt mention the festival size, but I'd put even the much smaller contest at Deep Roots Festival (25-40 teams) up there with 16,000 paid attendance...

I suspect Salisbury's 110+ teams would be up there with the largest events on the east coast.

With 30,000+ attendees and that large a contest, one could easily debate that it's the largest.

THANKS for the Greenwood, SC plug! Blue Ridge is definitely a top event...not the largest on the East Coast. But, any event that can keep it up for 18 years running....says A LOT! Greenwood is slightly smaller....but, probably now the largest in SC.

Harmon Field in Tryon, NC is a PERFECT venue for que! Shade trees and an adjacent creek.

Did anyone detect a condescending New York attitude on the part of the writer? As a New Yorker and a BBQ competitor, I don't like the portrayal of our community as a bunch of hicks.

Heeee!

I take it none of you read the article on The Economist Online and the comments...

Typical comments for city-dwelling moe-rons.

What other NC contests are designated as state championships? Is the Blue Ridge contest really the only one?

EDIT: Disregard the question. Did a search on KCBS's site.
