Default HLSR World Championship BBQ Cookoff

Allegedly, these are the judges rules for the HLSR BBQ cookoff.

All you judges and KCBS folks, what do you think of these ?

1. Sight, texture (1 to 5): "Does it look like BBQ?"

2. Smell (1-10): "Does it smell like BBQ?"

3. Tenderness (1-15): "Is it tender?"

4. Taste (1-20): "Does it taste like BBQ?"

5. Just circle your scores; we'll do the adding.

6. Write your name on the score card.

7. Change forks and plates for each sample.

8. Cleanse your palate between each sample.

9. This is the biggie: No talking to fellow judges.

10. Judge the food as though you had to explain your score to the cook.

11. Turn off your cell phone.

12. No doggie bags!

Sounds like a bunch of amateur judges.

Not necessarily a bad thing - but "world championship" PULEEEZE!

Forks? :D

No doggie bags? There'd be a freakin' riot if they tried that at the events I've judged. Some judges "live" for the baggies.

The no talking is normal. The "cleansing the palate" is normal.

I do like #10 but figure the odds of it being followed.

How much do the judges pay for the opportunity to judge? (I'm not kidding, a lot of events now charge the judges - especially for the rib contest.)

The scoring looks bit screwy but it seems to automatically weight the taste and tenderness where they belong - smell?? That's a new one! Checking for Kingsford lighter fluid, I guess.

Don't know if they are real or not--HLSR web site is silent on judging rules.
But:
Quote:
12. No doggie bags!
should be the rule everywhere.
Like DF said--the ranks of the Judges would be thinned out dramatically and maybe we could get some who came to judge, not to fill the freezer
I have seen this in action- they are not even subtle about their motives
Not slamming all judges--good ones out there.
Just too many who are there for the wrong reason and it shows in their scoring.

I like the ranking:
(low to high)
Appearance, Smell, Tenderness, Taste.

In Houston they'll get discussion that if it doesn't smell like mesquite it must not be 'que :D Hickory, oak, and pecan need not apply!

The Livestock Show is run by oh, 16,000 or so volunteers. I figure the ones that do the judging are all volunteer
as well.

What got me about the alleged rules is the "look, taste and smell like BBQ".

BBQ means different things to different folks. For example, in Bill's childhood it was baked beef smothered in
Open Pit sauce.

There were a good number of contestants (350+ I think).

Lastly, this list came from a column in today's Houston Chronicle.

Have never competed or judged but the rules seem logical to me. Spock mod!
