Default New Santa Maria Grill

After an incredibly annoying 5 month stretch without a grill, and a whopping 6 years without a smoker, my long walk in the desert is coming to an end. Have an order in with Rich over at Gator for a smoker, and I picked up a Santa Maria style grill from Santa Maria BBQ Outfitters when I was down in, er, Santa Maria last weekend. (That has to count as a pilgrimage of some kind)

I didn't get any photos taken before I lit her up for the first time, but I took some today after I greased it down for the second time.

It's Santa Maria BBQ Outfitters' 20x30 model, I got some cast iron grates online that fit pretty good, I prefer the cast iron to the expanded metal. I'll probably make a charcoal grate out of what was the grill.

Here's the first casualty of the new grill. Threw a steak on there last night as I was seasoning up the new grates. Grass fed from whole foods, first grass fed steak I've had. Was surprisingly flavorful and tender for what looked like a very lean piece of meat.

Fixed, the forum must recognize the flickr links and change them somehow, just linked the raw images, should be working now.

The placement of the "Serious Barbecue" book is accidental, by the way, though it provides a nice subliminal message :-)

You pick up some Red Oak while you were down there? Gotta have that for a pure Santa Maria Tri Tip.

Santa Maria cooker is at the top of my want list. Good for you!

Steak looks yummy too

I didn't get any oak while I was there, and the mesquite lump I got from BBQ galore was crap. Headed down to Eggs By The Bay, supposedly they have a better lump selection. Will probably get a half cord of wood or so at some point. You know any reputable suppliers in the bay?

Sweet pit, I am wanting a Santa Maria pit also....still working on convincing the wife. I don't know how far north they deliver, but I get my wood from The Bundled Wood Co-thebundledwoodco.com. Great selection, pricing and service.

Nice pit, I like those Santa Maria Outfitters pits. Eggs By The Bay should have the connections to get you the oak.

I bought one just like that when I was in Lompoc (my home town) last year for my Sister's funeral. Those grates look cool. Where did you get them? As far as oak I have a few sticks but I've settled on cherry wood since the oak is unavailable around here. I cooked some chicken and top sirloin Sunday over cherry. Turned out very Santa Maria-y. I used Hitching Post Magic Dust for seasoning.
