Default Wine Barrel Smoker Project

Material:

My goal:

My friend and neighbor Oreste cleaning out the barrel with water and rocks inside the barrel. He said this is the way he does it in Italy.

The barrel is originally from Jerez, Spain. It used to have Brandy in it from the Spanish Bodega (winery) Bobadilla & Co. It was shipped to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. You can see the family crest that was stamped into the wood.

This is a brandy label from the company Bobadilla & Co. The family crest is top middle.

The barrel was in the basement of a friends family's farmhouse. His father used to make Apple wine in it.

SWEET!!! My BIL works for a winery, and he said he'd get me a couple of old barrels. I want to do the same thing!! I know it won't last as long as a metal smoker/UDS, but it'll be a fun project, and a great conversation piece. I really hope you'll keep posting pron as the build progresses.

Matt

what's up with the rocks?

There was alot of sediment and gunk in the barrel. It was still 3/4 full with apple wine. I think the stuff had been in there for over 6 years.
The rocks roll around inside and loosen up all the stuff. It all flows out with the water.

How long did it take you to drink all that wine?

That is one fine looking smoker. No way I can call that a UDS. Best of luck with the build. Makes me want to go back to Lynchburg, TN and buy a Jack Daniels barrel and try the same thing.

I think that's really a great looking cooker.

I'd probably burn the house down if it were mine.

Most folks fill it with water and drain it before each cook (let's the wood soak up moisture) and leave about 3-4 inches of water in the bottom during the cook so any sparks don't catch.

Any owner's want to comment?
