Thinking about purchasing a used FEC100, was wondering if I can lay it down on its back and slide it into the back of my minivan without damage or harm to get it home, or should I use a trailer? Thanks in advance!

Yes you can.
Make sure all the pellets are removed and the fire pot is vacuumed well.
And, the drip pan has no grease in it.
I would remove the shelves also.

Sucker weighs about 400 lbs though and would be a beast to slide in/out.
I always carried mine with a utility trailer.

I do it all the time for catering. I just put a bungie cord around the pellet hopper to keep the lid closed and don't bother with removing the pellets. Its a good idead to remove the shelves and clean the firepot as stated before, and you will only forget to remove the grease pan once...
