Default BBQ Sauce with no sugar or artificial sweeteners

I'm a diabetic and I have recently changed my eating habits. No sugar or artificial sweeteners. Has anyone had any success making a sugar free sauce or rub? Greatly appreciated in advance.

I too am diabetic. Although I believe it still has some sugar, the sauce which has become my new standard, and which doesn't jack up my blood sugar, is "Slippery Hill" BBQ sauce, by John Henry.

It is not very sweet tasting, more of a "sharp" flavor, which I've always preferred anyway. It definitely is not one of the more sugary sauces available.

I'll be interested to see where this thread goes.

I don't sauce, but I know from experience that you can drop the sugar from most rub recipes without a problem. I keep this rub mixed up and use it on chicken, fish, and pork.
Greek Seasoning Blend

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon basil
1 tsp sage
1 tsp oregano
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon dill
1 teaspoon marjoram
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1 teaspoon rosemary
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in blender, grind to a fine powder, and store in an airtight container.

You can search this site using the search bar at the bottom of the page,

there have been a lot of posts on this subject in the past.

Stubb's Original has 6 grams of carbohydrates per 2 tablespoons. It tastes great too. I don't know if that's low enough in sugar, but it's the one I use when I'm cutting down on carbs.

Can you use honey as a sweetener? I was asked to make a "paleo" bbq sauce that turned out pretty good, but it was a vinegar/red pepper flake sauce with honey as the sweetener.

If you're interested I can hunt down the recipe.

Stubbs is good, but I'm only allowing myself 20 grams of carbs per day.

Honey has an abundance of sugar and can be problematic (honey and biscuits, for example) . The Paleo crowd can eat all of this natural sweetener they can get their mitts on. What they stay away from is the refined stuff.

In paleo, if your ancestors killed it, knocked it out of a tree or dug it up with a stick, you can eat it.

Good to know. I wasn't sure how honey played into the diabetic side of things.

I also try to keep my carb intake below 20 per day. Try some Shack Attack finishing sauce. It's zero carb or put near.
