Not that I ever expect to get one, but how do you get a 180 Score? Besides doing an incredible job, I'm thinking just the numbers here.
My limited math abilities say that 6 judges, judging 1 category with 3 criteria and with 9 as the best score for each of those criteria, the score would be 162. Like this: 6 judges x 3 criteria x 9 points = 162. Where does the 180 come from? What am i missing?

The actual scoring can be found on the KCBS website. But in short, I know that a perfect 999 equals 36.0000, and 36 X 5 judges equals 180. Hope that helps...

Scores are weighted, not each category is the same. A 9 in appearance is not as valuable to your overall score as a 9 in taste. The weighting is...

Appearance ‐ 0.5714, Taste ‐ 2.2858, Tenderness ‐ 1.1428.

Plus, the lowest score for each category is thrown out, meaning you only have 5 scores for each category counted.

So, if you get all 9's, one score is thrown out, leaving 5 9's in each category. With the weighting the score would be...
Appearance: 5 x 9 x 0.5714 = 25.713
Taste: 5 x 9 x 2.2858 = 102.861
Tenderness: 5 x 9 x 1.1428 = 51.426

...which adds up to 180.

Thanks bigabyte, I was entering the same info, but a lot less eloquently than you phrased it. :thumb:

I think KCBS used to have a 180 and a Perfect 180, which is all 6 judges giving 999...Not sure if that is still the case or not...And yes I will be self promoting and say I know that cuz I got one in 2003.

Actually, it's lowest judge score is thrown out, not lowest score in each category.

For instance:
Judge 1 - 877 - 28.5714
Judge 2 - 878 - 29.7142
Judge 3 - 998 - 34.8572
Judge 4 - 999 - 36.0000
Judge 5 - 876 - 27.4286
Judge 6 - 788 - 31.4286
The 876 from Judge 5 is thrown out as the 27.4286 is the lowest score.

Thanks for your replies. I knew it had to be a whole cr*pload more complicated than I was thinking.
