Here is my CoalBasket, I'm using a mix of Lump and KF and on top
I've placed 17 lit Briquettes. This is my typical starting procedure. Quote:

Remember to bend it the opposite way that I did (see pic below)... make the diamonds point upward instead of around the basket... unless you're in for a workout! It's 5 times easier to bend that way. Other than that, you may want to check out my video (in my sig) on building a charcoal basket (and I think Norco has one too), so you can at least learn what NOT to do. -r

See how spread out his coals are? Maybe that's because he is using briquettes instead? |

Seasoned and Ready to go!
Quote:
Doing the burn out and tossed the lid on to get it mostly burned but not warped so I finished it off with a small hand torch. I finally got some free time in life to finish up the UDS this past Friday. Cleaned & ready for seasoning, note I just finished rebuffing and washing the layer of rust out of it. Currently using magnets to control air flow and just the open 2" bung port for exhaust. Now just need to practice and learn some fire control. The basket build: I think I am going to make some removeable inserts out of some scrap to be able to hold a smaller, more compact mound of charcoal for shorter burns. |

You have done a nice job of the build. As to the smaller basket I think you will find that it isn't really necessary since you control the fire with your intake and when you are finished you simply close the intake and exhaust and save the remaining coals for another day.

Thanks, I just need some more time and practice with it. The basket is 16" diameter and 8" sides so it does hold a lot of fuel, more than I would need to do a few chickens for the family.

Why don't you guys wait until the coals ash over, then start cooking!!!! I believe that would take the guess work out of starting the fire basket and it not going out as easy whenever the intakes and lid is closed!!! Just a thought!!! Peppa!!!!

We want it to go out with the lid and intakes closed. Also if you let it all ash over your temps would be around 500 and uncontrollable.
