Default Return my offset for a WSM

I have a cheap Char-Griller offset smoker and I am considering returning it to get a WSM, what are your thoughts? What should I expect with a WSM as I've never used a vertical smoker.

As an owner of both a cheap offset like a Char-Griller and also of WSM's, I would not hesitate for even one second to trade in the Char-Griller for the WSM.

WSM's are easy to operate, use a lot less fuel than an offset, and do not require much if any tending once you get them going.

Some people say you shoudl learn on an offset, and there is wisdom in that. That's how I learned. But you will ultimately be happier with a WSM, and can learn how to properly operate it quickly.

So it's up to you really.

I mean I do pretty well with the offset but it's tiring having to always tend the fire, I actually do a hybrid Santa Maria Style in it where I put the coals/wood in the grill part like this:

But I want a WSM for smoking and I am gonna build a Santa Maria style pit for Tri-tip and chicken.

I have both and when I smoke something I use the WSM.... but I still like my Charbroil ......but I use it more as a grill then anything else.... it just uses to much fuel ..... but does the best turkey legs......which I'm allways asked to do....

I think you've got the picture.

Sorry, bad pun.

Didn't mean to be negative.

How well does the WSM work with wood? I've never seen the inside of a WSM or used one so I am really new to the whole vertical smoker thing.

Folks typically use lump charcoal/briquettes with smoke wood added to it.

Look here, watch the bottom video.

For the WSM you use either briquettes or lump as the fuel and wood chunks for flavor. the beauty of the WSM is that it can go for hours on one load of fuel.

This cutaway image may help answer some of your questions on what the inside of a WSM looks like:

It works fine, as long as you mean using wood chunks for smoke flavor, with charcoal or lump for heat. It's just a totally different fire from what's in an offset that's getting heat from the wood. In the wsm, it's an oxygen-deprived environment that allows the wood and charcoal to smolder very slowly. In the offset, you're adding a little wood at a time every 20 min. to an hour with lots of oxygen trying to burn a clean fire.

Yep,

Never met a single person who owned a WSM and did not swear by it.

Your offset is used??? I don't think you should try to return it....
WSM over offset any day, unless you have a large offset and need the room.
