[QUOTE=caliking;2376044]I built one, and love it. http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=133467

I read and looked at your build, one question...why did you cut the bottom of the new drum and not the top with the bung holes?

I did it that way to have an opening at the bottom to make thorough cleaning easier i.e. when washing the inside don't have to tip the drum to get the water out. What was i thinking... who cleans a drum? It destroys the ugly!

So, as I mentioned yesterday I picked up a new 16 gallon, open-top, unlined drum for my mini-UDS project. But I ran into a slight dilemma. The drum body fits perfectly on the Smokey Joe so now I'm thinking instead of going the UDS route I can turn this into a tall boy mini-WSM. I'll even be able to hang 3 full slabs of ribs without getting too close to the coals. If I do this I'll replace those thin Smokey Joe legs with heavier duty legs, WSM style.
Has anyone ever gone this route, using a drum instead of the tamale pot? Decisions.....

Thanks for that link. I can go either way with this drum, but two completely different mods required for each setup. I already have a 55-gal UDS so I'm kind of liking the tall boy mini-WSM idea now. I didn't realize how well the drum fit inside the Smokey Joe kettle. :)

I say do it! Just make sure the drum is steady on the SJ base, otherwise it may easily tip over because of the height

It has been done... you'll see a few pix here:

http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=115513

Not too much on strengthening the legs, but here's a little something:

http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=138142

Can't wait to see pron of whatever you decide to do! I'll be doing something very similar myself as soon as I find the time....

Thanks for the links Bob13. The WSM style leg mod shown is exactly what I had in mind. I already have some aluminum bar stock to work with.
