There is no set rule for a diffuser. Some people use them, some don't. I plan on experimenting with them in my UDS. Here are some threads -

I think it is around an 18" base. I use three grates in my drum: first grate 1" down, second grate 6" below that, and terracotta pot base sits on the third grate another 1 - 2" below that.

One of the reasons I'd like a diffuser is because I've heard that their are frequent big flare ups with a UDS when you try to get your food out. I'm thinking a diffuser can help give me more time getting the food in and out, or when checking for temps.

Thanks!
They are very heat resistant and will stay hot quite a while after the fire is out. If you close down your intakes before taking off the lid you won't have any problems with temp spikes. Just don't forget to open them back up.

Did the burn out the weekend. Finished the charcoal basket, but didn't get pics. Just going to add some high heat paint, chamber gauge and lid. Hopefully going to cook on it this weekend.

i've gone through hundreds of posts this weekend and purchased everything I need except the expanded metal for the charcoal basket.

Can anyone tell me where I may be able to locate some expanded metal? I tried Home Depot and they didn't have any, I called a local machine shop in Dallas and they were going to charge me $74 for a sheet that is 8" by 44", which seemed a bit high to me.

Another question just came up, if I were to purchase a barrel with a teflon coated inside, would I need to burn out the teflon or could I use some sort of cleaner? Assuming of course it would be safe to cook/eat from after cleaning out the inside.

Any opinions/recommendations would be appreciated

Here are two places to get it online:

https://www.metalsupermarkets.com/ca...ductID=EXC349F

These guys will cut it to shape for you, but keep in mind that you can't specify in which direction you want it cut, i.e. with the long axis of the diamond shapes aligned with the length of the sheet vs. across the sheet. Maybe you can call them up and specify that...

http://www.mcmaster.com/#9302t89

This is a 24" square sheet. You'd have to get out a jig saw, a hack saw, an air-powered cutoff tool, a torch, or put it on a sheetmetal shear to cut it to size. In order to make a circular wall that goes around (for example) a base made out of a charcoal grate from an 18.5" Weber (available at Home Depot or Lowes), you'll need to cut two 8x24" pieces from the sheet.

As for bending the expanded steel sheet, I devised this method, but haven't tried it yet. I haven't been able to find the time to build my UDS yet, but I'll be trying this method when I do:

I'll then be welding the two half-circle-shaped 8"x24" pieces around the above mentioned charcoal grate and welding it all together.

Good luck!

I was able to find mine at homedepot In the hardware section near the sheet metal and angle iron. Did you look in that area?

Hmmm... For some reason, I didn't even think to look there. I'll have to see if our HD has it!

Ebay was mentioned earlier in the thread:

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-4-X-9-EXPANDED...item2556f5f28a

That seems to be a very good price and the exact size you will need.

12 x 48 is the size needed for a 55 gallon?

You'll need to cut the length to suit the diameter of whatever grate you're using.
