I say build them the way you want to and use em. It is your choice in how you construct it. The blue print is here. Use as you wish. Simple!!

I also agree with built it anyway you like......but......don't come around complaining when it doesn't work the way YOU thought it would. Myself I've built a couple and all were the K.I.S.S. method and they all worked flawlessly. Then I decided to step out of the box and change things up and had trouble controlling the temps. I've fixed it since then but I knew beforehand things might not go the way I thought they would and they didn't. But your right it's your build so go for it someone has to. You never know a little thing could be a big improvement for us all to share.

That said, I too would be irritated by a post that went something like "The UDS is a piece of crap. I put seven 1/4" intakes on it... SEVEN... and it still wouldn't get up to temp. I'm gonna go buy a real smoker!" -r

There is really not much to tell about mine. I used the K.I.S.S. method because I need it to work right out of the hole. I did not have the time nor the want to guinea pig it up. It has preformed as expected so far.

If I were just starting out wanting to build a UDS I would definetly do the K.I.S.S. on my first one then you have a proven rig to smoke on. Then experiment all you want on your second one. That way you can always go back to your proven one till you get the bugs worked out like I did.

I found a source for recycled stainless drums here locally so I sold my steel UDS on craigslist and built me a new stainless version last weekend.
It looks like a tin can with the label peeled off. I did a 5 1/2 lb. shoulder for the first cook. It came out real well. Now I just need to find me a dome lid for it.

These nice folks: http://www.arcticproducts.com/ssgrills.htm will sell you a SS lid if you call them- that's what Paul B and I use on ours. It's exactly the same size as a Weber lid, so measure your drum to see if it will fit.

Ya beat me to it Mush................
My ss drum must be a tad larger than a weber grill because a weber lid won't fit mine. I had to take a hammer to my brand new ss domed lid(yikes!!) to get it to fit and then had to add an additional mod to keep it on. And shameless plug........ Hope that gives you something to chew on..... Paul B SS UDS Last edited by Paul B; 03-09-2010 at 08:14 PM.. Reason: added content |

Wow--that's definitely not an UGLY drum smoker! Very beautiful in fact. I'm gonna be keeping my eyes open for a stainless drum.
Still no ill effects from my "Epoxy Phenolic Chicken" btw and I have eaten it four different times since Sunday evening... |

I'll be watchin' closely for typos, which I'll quickly interpret as evidence of brain damage.

I just picked up my drum last night. It was a closed drum, so I'm going to have to find a lid, or get a Weber. I think it's gonna work out. The drum was better than I thought. Brand new, never used, for free!

With it being a new drum, would I still need to "burn" the drum before cooking?
