Default How Many Butts For 50 People?

I'm going to be doing the cooking for My Parents 50th in Feb and we anticipate a crowd of 40+. I want to make sure there's enough and leftovers won't be a problem since they will help feed the out-of-towners while there here. I'll also be serving Tex-Mex rice, beans, salad, chips and salsa.

Five or Six (depending on size) oughtta do it. Shoot for 40 pounds pre-cooked. This is a tad overkill and you should have leftovers, as you requested.

I agree, 50 people x 6 oz per person, 300oz/16oz per pound = 18.75 pounds cooked. Figure 50ish % loss with cooking and start w/40 pounds. Should be a wash with a sammie or three left over. If big eaters figure 7ozs.

Thanks! I was figuring about 6 butts but that was just a guess. I was also thinking 2 of those throw-away turkey pans full of rice and a stockpot full of beans. I'd make the salsa by opening 2 gallon cans of tomatoes and simmering with peppers. After it cools I'll add cilantro, green onions and some seasoning.
