Default Norco outdoor cooking season has begun!

Not at my house as BBQ is not seasonal at the Sawyer casa. I cooked and just pulled 6 slabs of Baby backs for work and the smell of rendered pork fat was suddenly overwelmed by.... The smell of charcoal lighter. Ruined my appetite.

My neighbor fired up her grill this afternoon while I was grilling. She must use a gallon of lighter fluid. 1 hour after lighting it, you can still smell the fumes.

What would y'all say is the best method for starting coals granted someone does not have a weed burner? I too have worried that I use too much fluid, although it does not impart a bad taste on the food, but still, I can't help but wonder if I'm using too much in the beginning. Thanks in advance!

My good friend, let me be blunt with you. Any lighter fluid is too much. And any amount of if DOES impart a bad taste on the food. If you've been using lighter fluid you just don't know how bad you are making it taste.

Get yourself a $14.00 charcoal chimney from Home Depot. A sheet of newspaper and a match is all you need after that.

May I suggest you immediately cease and desist from use of charcoal lighter fluid.

BBQG,

I do have a chimney from Home Depot and have tried the newspaper method. However, I can't seem to keep enough heat for the coals to ignite and just end up with burnt newspaper ash littering my back porch and unlit coals.

Any trick to coal placement in the chimney in regards to the newspaper?

I will cease with the fluid from here on out. Thanks for the advice.

*Edit- I have the smaller black chimney but have seen the larger silver one's at Lowe's. Am I choking down the coals with too many placed in the chimney at one time maybe?

Fill the chimney. Wad up two large pieces of newspaper. Dribble a little cooking oil on the paper. Light the paper and wait about 20 minutes.

The $20.00 for the weed burner is worth every penny.

Cooking oil, yes. I didn't even think about that. Thanks for the helpful suggestion BBQG!

Dogphin, I agree that it will be money well spent. Never really needed one until I decided to put a drum together here recently.

get the weber chimney starter as its about the best. then use some fire starter sticks such as diamonds strike a fire. takes the coals about 20 min to be ready.

I recently bought my dad the weber model chimney. It does seem to be an easier model to work with plus the extra coals are nice, compared to my HD chimney.

Never heard of the Diamonds Strike a Fire. 12 minute burn time, nice! Will definitely try those out. Thank you MB!

Gentle nudge in the correct direction - eloquent as usual.

Lighter fluid.....invented so drunk jack asses could jump around like a bunch of Kansas City Fa*****- then cook some burgers.
People, the good folks at Weber have this invention called the chimney lighter. Like 5 bucks a pack or something.
No smell and no ashes.
PS- fathers day gift is a weed burner.....

Wrong! Invented so when a LA team wins a championship the real celebration can start more quickly!
