I'm a little baffled. I drop a full chimney of raging hot coals into the side of the basket, where I've dug out a little hole. Then I let it sit for 10 min to spread the love a little bit, then cover. With 2 x 1" vents and a weber kettle lid both wide open andd the lid seal is leaky, I'm having trouble getting the temp above 250. Do I need to start an even bigger fire or something? This has happened a couple of times now. Could it be humidity issues with my charcoal stash?

Thanks,
Chob

When you say 2x 1" vents I am guessing you are referring to the bottom
inlets...most drum plans and documentation call for 3 of them.

Try putting the coals on top of your full basket. It should be getting hot. Calibrate your thermo also.

Damp charcoal could indeed be the problem. Pretty easy to try a new dry bag before you do any mods to the UDS.

Yes, apologies. 2 x 1" refers to inlets. Ima grab a new bag right now and try throwing a fresh chimney straight on top.
