reasons why we compete
This may be off topic if so i apologize. Guess I have too much time on my hands waiting for surgery. I started thinking about all the bretheren friends and why we compete. All those that would give everything they have to the team next door if they needed it. This was came to paper.
Reasons why The air was heavy with silence. And the smoke still filled the air. The leaves continued they're autumn quest Spiraling downward without a care. Nary a person could utter a word. Perched on the edge of they're seat. Straining to hear the sound of they're name.. Wash away the feelings of defeat. Watching the prayers for a little luck. Ride wisps of smoke into the sky. Even knowing they had done they're best. Couldn't keep them from wondering why. To strive so hard for perfection. For those fleeting seconds of fame. All the time, effort, and money spent. Just to hear them call they're name. Maybe it the ribbons and trophy's. Or cash and fame for which they strive. Maybe its all the people they meet. That keeps this passion alive. It's not about the fame or cash. Or trophy's and ribbons at contest end. Its about that person sitting next to you. The one you call your friend. By Rick Rucker

It is about the friends but when you start out you know no one (or at least I didnt)....so for me its the fun of seeing if I can please the judges with my cooking. I find BBQ or chili or whatever type of comp I am entering, thrilling for the simple fact that I might just be able to figure out what someone likes. (Sally Field mod)
Knowing that you will have a fantastic time and meet new people along the way that hopefully become friends is the big payout. Actually placing kinda wraps those two things (friendship & competition) in a blanket of happiness. |

Great!
You know I would have never met some of the greatest people I know if it was not for this stuff. Ok that and to get a way from the wife. Luckily I found a great partner in bbq and we have a great time. Now only if he would stop doing the rain dance.

LOL!
It is definitely the friendships (although it is nice to get a call every once in awhile to prove to the wife that I was at a competition) Great poem.
