I ordered the vent itself.. Its 1/8" stamped. We cut the hole in the door with a torch.
Ordered the tube rolled from the steel supplier.
Other than that everything is done using a Torch, Grinder and a Stick Welder...

More pics are coming. We have the grate in the and the fire box will go on tomorrow...

Yes, its about 800# the tube part is alomost 400# by itself... without the ends on it...

I think the firebox is like 100#

Lots of steel... everything is made from 1/4" or better... the stack pipe is like 1/2" to keep it hot leaving the pit to keep a good draft going...

Interesting positioning of the firebox intake and exhaust outlet. Looks like they are essentially at cooking grale level? I'm guessing you should get pretty good laminar flow across the pit. Have you done this before? I would be interested in the temp change across the pit once you get her fired up.

dwfisk:

Yes, i guess the theory is that if we look at the hot air and force it to the top of the smoker creating "pressure" the heat should flow across the center of the pit "laminar flow" with the best heat being at grate level "center" and the release of the pressure out the exhaust stack hence, grate level exhaust hole. Creating a non-turbulent environment.

But im no farking engineer, just guessing here...

engineers assume it works on paper... I make it work. :)

But then again laminar is fluid motion not smoke... so maybe we can come up with our own theory on smoke...

bbq pit + wood = smoke

Meat

LOL.... WTF

I with you on experimentation and just making stuff work. It looks good and makes sense to me. Proof will be in the Q, best of luck.

Hey, Thanks DW... I am also very excited to see if i can maintain an even heat across the grate... I may have to make a few mods the more i think about it.

I used a 45 deg angle on the inlet which may not be steep enough... i might add a secondary angle to the top.. to shoot the heat up at a steeper angle... but that will require some more tests before we get into that chit...

But then again... i may add another pc at a more obtuse angle to deflect the heat if its too hot at the FB end and to keep any heat from tumbling over the end of the heat deflector... i am not an engineer like i said but i think either can happen if the angle is wrong...

If you have any ideas shoot em at me...

Thanks man!

I'm gonna start a new thread to see if ee can motivate the brethren to talk a little about how to measure temp variation and whats a meaningful difference. Don't want to hijack your excellent build hread.
