I would love to try them if I could find them-anyone got a line on a source?

My wine barrel chunks get the best overall flavor when I use them in my Smokette 008. You can smell the red wine in the smoke and the beef roasts soak it up. Unlike any of my other cookers.

My Local Ace Hardware has them, I haven't tried the chips but I did get the pellets from BBQrs Delight. I usually use pellets for quick cooks.

Personally never really cared for the chips as much as chunks. Having said that, I would still encourage you to make your own decision.

That's actually what spawned the question... Found a really good price on a large amount... wanted to get the rooms thoughts, since I am still pretty new, and often defer to the veterans on things until I get a chance to try it out on my own.

Thanks!

The bag smells great. Nothing like a shredded JD oak barrel. Good for grilled steaks or rack of lamb, but hugely expensive for smoking. Best price I found was last year at WalMart, about half what the retail list was. No JD chips this year however at WalMart, so no purchase.
Problem on the left coast is being unable to find any other oak chips or chunks. I was able to get split oak from a firewood source, but the bark was so thick, about a half of it was unusable for smoking.
Haven't tried the oak wine barrell chunks, but they should be good.

Around here, Menard's sells both wine casks and whiskey barrels in the spring. Most (not all) are sawed in half to be sold as planters. They mark-down what's left in the fall, so...

Last month, my wife & I ran 1.5 Jim Beam barrels thru a chipper. Close to 70# of Jim Beam chips. Might have to put 'em in the will. If you know somebody with a decent chipper (6" width) make a deal with 'em. Wimpy chippers won't get it done.
