Here is an idea I have;

I know that Harvester’s is having a lot of trouble stocking food right now. Combine that with shelters needing food (Turkey’s) for the upcoming thanksgiving holiday.

And here is the idea I have. What if we can put together a food drive / Comp cook out.

50% of Entry fees goes to the food bank 50% go to payouts
Get area businesses to donate things for a raffle
The general public get a raffle ticket for each item donated
BBQ teams will be provided spots to cook (electricity) and will cook a comp style event but the turn in times will be leading up to 12:00am
Each team will also cook (1) if not more Turkeys to be given to shelters
Winner gets 50% of entry fees and bragging rights and (trophy/banner/silver plate) to hold for the next year

Let me know your thoughts, I know it may be to late but I think we could do a lot of good for others who need the help.

Thank you.

I don't think there's enough time to pull something like this together. Plus alot of ppl are comped out. Maybe just a charity cook. Get someone to donat turkeys and have ppl come together and cook them.

Will - I think the idea could go someplace, alot of folks were gone this weekend (Garden City and the Jack) -- But I think Vern is right.... Getting sponsors, donations, location, etc. all in the next couple weeks is a pretty tall order.

Even the small event I pull together at Melvern takes several months of work to pull off. With the economy like it is... You might have a hard time finding a way to pull it together, or getting a location to work with you.

I love the idea of helping out organizations like havesters or some of the other local food pantries. I'm sure that most of us cook up some turkeys & other stuff for the Holidays. Why not throw a couple of extra turkeys or butts on to donate? It doesn't take much to contact a local church to find out who could use a little extra help. I love the idea of a get together to do this, but there are alot of ways we can help out those in need. Same results, just a different way of doing it. Anyone who would be serious about doing a cook like is described above, just take the $ you would have spent on gas & beer & donate that. Throw in some a$$ kick'n smoked turkey, and you can make someone real happy. Just a thought. Steve

I think this year is to late but I'm going to really chew on this for next year. I am going to talk with Harvesters to find out how or if they are interested as well as a few shelters to donate the cooked food to. Who would be willing to cook some turkeys with me the weekend before thanksgiving?

Some of us on the forum are board members of Kookers Kare... Let's kick the idea around and see if Kookers Kare could help you as well...
We donate 8000+ lbs of pork in the spring to Harvesters, and help other similar groups nationally start thier own cooks.... We also already do some turkeys, and will have a winterfest this year... we might be able to help you run with your idea as well.

That would be great, I spoke to my church (CLC - Shawnee Mission Pkwy and Monticello) which has plenty of room for 20-30 teams and we can use the parking lot and have access to water. Please also let me know what else I can do in helping with Kookers Kare.
