Talking Progressive thread with simulataneous mUDS and UDS builds for Christmas Gifts

This is going to be a thread in progress. I hope you enjoy giving as much as I do!

Most of my friends and family who have the opportunity to build their own UDS' have. With my help and or designing their own from the UDS thread. For those of my friends and family who for various reasons could not build their own but have that smoking desire, this is for y'all! Merry Christmas! SsSsshh, keep quiet until Christmas though.

I will update as much of the steps as possible. Spent all day yesterday grabbing most things required for the builds.

All 3 will have dome lids. The 55 will have two racks. The recipient of this one also needed a grill so double win. I have another 55 top, so when he has to grill and smoke at the same time he will use the second rack only, with that lid and the dome and cooking grate on the weber.

All three will be Norco's redneck design. Its one I know works. I am experimenting with single intakes on my personal drums.

UDS
1 each Recon Unlined 55 gallon open head drum

3 each 1" Gas pipe nipples plus 2 caps

1 each 1" Ball valve (decided to bump up to 1" due to my last build performing better with it in low to know wind conditions, ie. overnight summer cooks)

6 each 1.5" zinc carriage bolts nuts and washers for rack (I use my Propane torch and turn them glowing red and remove all the funky stuff)

1 each Weber 22.5" Kettle grill for dome lid, cooking grate. Will also build up grill so parts can be used for grilling or smoking.

1 each ash catcher ( will use the "deheaded" drum bottom after cleaning jagged edges)

1 Thermometer (undecided)

1 each 14" diameter coal basket made from flattened expanded metal with 3" feet

mUDS x2
1 each New Unlined 30 gallon 19 gauge open head drum

3 each 3/4 gas pipe nipples and 2 caps.

1 each 3/4 Brass Ball valve

3 each 1.5" zinc carriage bolts nuts and washers for rack (I use my Propane torch and turn them glowing red and remove all the funky stuff)

1 each Kingsford 18.5" Kettle grill for dome lid, cooking grate. Will also build up grills so parts can be used for grilling or smoking.

2 each Exterior Handles Fastened with SS screws

1 each Beer Bottle opener Fastened with SS screws

1 each Thermometer (undecided) walmart generic probaly

1 each 12" diameter coal basket made from expanded metal with 2.5" feet

1 each ash cathcer (undecided) Pizza pan maybe

UDS' in their most bare forms.

Daddy's Big helper [Future Pit Master]

Basket drawings. Going to be all expanded metal with flat bar handles and bolts for feet.

At first, I was extremely concerned about the risk of brainwashing when opening a Progressive thread, so i wore my extra heavy duty foil. However, it seems you are going to build some cool UDS smokers, so I guess in this case progressive is a good thing.

Yeah I guess that word carries more weight these days. It was the best word for " a thread that will be an ongoing with multiple updates" I could think of.

UPDATE:::

Got a lot of work done yesterday, heres the progress.

Had to grind the inhibitor out of the 35's. =No fun

De head the 55. This thing works exactly like a can opener. Also leaves pretty smooth interior.

Gonna make the removed head an ash catcher. Grinded and bent up tabs to make it easy to remove.

A good bath for all. Used a heavy household detergent, TIDE and a rag. Rinse repeat etc..

Burn the NAstY off the bolts. I know theres a lot of debate about not using stainless and zinc etc. I feel comfortable taking them up to a heat that they will NEVER see in the cooker. any6 off gas happens then. After the forst couple cooks they are covered in creosote anyway.

Closer. You can see all the patina from all the coating being burned off

Marking off for holes. Went 2" and 8" on the Cooking grates for the 55 UDS.
Just 3" on the 30 gallon mUDS'. Intake was 2" high on 30 and 3" on 55 gallon.

More marks

Welding in the Pipe nipples. 3/4" on the mUDS and 1" on the UDS.

Almost complete. Just need coal baskets/ thermos/ handles and 2 more pop a top's! Then we can gift wrap.

Another shot Thanks for looking!

Looking good. Did you have to grind down the lip of the "bottom" for the weber lid to fit without alteration to the lid? I have started a similar build with the "top" of the drum at the bottom and cut out the bottom. I did have to grind down the lip of that drum a bit though for the weber lid to fin just right.
