Default Suggestions for building a charcoal box for stick burner

I have a lang 36 and want to build a charcoal box to go into my firebox. Sometimes I don't have the time to throw on a log every 20-30 minutes so I'm looking for a fuel alternative such as charcoal. I'm looking for a design that can use charcoal and increase my burn time. Any suggestions?

How much burn time do you get with a basket? Do you use charcoal or lump?

They are simple to build with expanded metal, stainless steel nuts/bolts/washers. No welding required. Just need something to make 4 cuts, then bend all 4 sides up and wrap the sides around each other. Wear gloves because the cut edges are really sharp. Then use the nuts/bolts/washers to make the legs. Adjust to the height you need. If you have a rack in your fire box the legs are not needed. Also need to file down all sharp edges do they don't bite you later.

^^^This. I had two of them like this for my stick burner. Filled with lump I could get about 7 hours at 225 degrees.

I use briquettes when using the basket. I have a pile of KBB, and if I want to spend money on more expensive fuel I'll use sticks. Burn time depends on temp. Mine runs hot on charcoal, so I have to limit the coal and reload occasionally. No setting and forgetting. Either way, much less frequent loading than splits.

If I do a custom made charcoal box as mentioned above won't the coals burn hot and fast? Does anyone create a maze affect inside the custom box to help reduce burn time?

I really don't see 1 log every 45 min to be much of an issue, If you want to use Coal build a UDS way more efficient.

I have made a maze with fire brick...It works...I just need to experiment more though to find the correct mix of wood and charcoal...I find it easier to add wood every hour to hold a target temp, instead using charcoal as a heat source...I only use charcoal at start up for a quick coal base...

Good luck, looking forward to your results...

Not if you bought 800 lbs worth of KBB when HD sold them for $4.88 per 2X20.

I know. I should have been more clear as to why I use charcoal as a cost savings method.
