Default Food Network: BBQ Steak Challenge

Got home from work last night and the wife was recording the Food Networks Challenge program for me...they were in Magnoila Arkansas doing a steak challenge...
Everything was cool until they were told to fire up their grills and all these idiots pull out their bottles of (gasp) lighter fluid and soak their coals...
WTH???? Finally they show one team of local police officers that have roughly 5 Weber chimneys set up that they are using...

How on earth can anyone consider themselves BBQist's when they use the devil's piss to light their coals?

Yeah, I thought about posting on that when I saw it. All those "pros" spraying lighter fluid on everything. They talked to the team using chimneys like they had discovered some newfangled technology.

I did like the one quote from the judge though. I can't remember exactly what he said but it was something like "God made beef perfect, all you need to do is keep from screwing it up".

I just bought a Weber Chimney going to fire it up today. I just hope the plastic handle does not get too hot. But I like how it will hold more than my el cheapo chimney which is rusting out pretty bad.

Your plastic handle is safe.

But your coal funnel grate isn't, especially if you use a turkey fryer burner to light it!

It's a great event! If you ever get the chance to check it out, take it!

I'd planned to cook it this year, until some recent family obligations came up.

Last year was a blast. I spent the day hanging out with Dr. BBQ, waiting for something to do Unlike a BBQ cookoff, there isn't a whole lot to do.

Best of luck this year Ray!

Edit: The cool thing...the beef is provided. You stop during the parade and they load up your 1" thick, USDA Prime ribeye and ice it down for you. You just cook it and turn one in. The rest you serve to the public that has purchased tickets.

Well I've never tried the turkey burner mod yet! I just use sawdust firestarters they seem to work really well and no after taste etc. More like a hummingbird burner if anything :) I'll light up a chimney today can't wait

Take some pieces of wire clothes hangers, and put them through on the outside, and twist them. I have been using my Weber chimney for 3 years, and lighting with my turkey fryer.

I just took my grate out and flipped it upside down. Works perfectly.
