Default Smoker - Insulation Blanket

Hi,

I've been thinking about getting a couple of insulation blankets for WSM's (both sizes).

Has anyone tried this? To be honest, I have no complaints about heat loss. The WSM really rocks, but it seems like it might be a cheap fix even if the benefits are minimal.

Thoughts?

Eric

I bought one of those space-age fitted covers for one of my 18.5" WSMs from the BBQ Guru, it even has the openings for the exhaust & the Guru fan. They're kinda pricey but work very well in the winters we get here in Iowa.

Go to the Virtualweberbullet.com website and look under operating tips then find cooking in the wind, cold and rain. Nice insulation writeup.

Harry Soo used water heater insulation on BBQ Pitmasters. Here's the thread: http://tvwbb.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/...64/m/652108574.

the water heater insulation/blanket has loose fiberglass that can come loose over time doesnt it? Is that a concern?

I use a welding blanket on my UDS. It made a HUGE difference during the below 20 degree cooks.

Has anybody thought about using exhuast wrap as insulation ? You wouldn't be able to remove it but I think it could look nice. I've been thinking of using it on my uds. something like this.

It's just the first link I got when I searched for it.

I seriously looked into it, but the cost is really high when you figure out how much you would need. Second, most of it isn't self adhesive. It is intended to be stretched tight around a small diameter pipe and then just secured at the ends. This would be really really hard to do around a drum or a weber. You can get a can of high temp silicone glue, but further costs and I wonder how well it attaches.

I also looked at HVAC system insulation. You can get some that is foil-faced self adhesive that is slightly more reasonably priced. But, it was still expensive, and I wasn't sure I wanted my drum looking like a ball of foil. I also didn't think it would be to weather resistant.

That is why I ended up with a welding blanket from Harbor Freight. I think it was $20. I Wrap the drum and secure with bungy cords. I don't care if it gets wet being left outside or whatever. Works well enough. But there are lots of ghetto options.
