The Norwich Rotary Club will be hosting a one day New England Barbecue Society grilling contest on May 7th, 2011 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. The cook's application is at the link below.

Norwich Grilling Application

The grilling contest is part of a larger BBQ themed event that is taking shape.

In addition to the grilling contest, there will be a people's choice wings event, where a half pan of wings will be provided to each team and they will be judged at a central location by the public. There will also be a beer garden for the public, batting practice for the kids, vendors and more.

A minimum of $2,500 in prize money has been pledged for the contests.

All proceeds of the event will go to benefit the homeless of Norwich.

The judges application will be posted soon.

Nice! I just sent in my app.
Looks like Dodd Stadium is real close to Mohegan Sun Casino. We'll be making a weekend out of this for sure.

Sheila is in the process of working out a discounted rate at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel, which is about a mile from the contest site. Maybe Saturday night we can gather a crowd of BBQers and head over to Mohegan Sun for some after contest hijinks!

We are in! Just signed up for nebs membership this week. Saw this on the event schedule. Can't wait to fire up the cookers.

Just a heads up. If anyone needs a hotel room for this comp hurry up and book it. Bon Jovi is playing at Mohegan casino on Saturday night. So the hotel there is filling up quick. I booked at the Courtyard Norwich. It's about 2 miles from the comp site!

Two months to go, get your apps in!

A quick update on the contest: the category of "pork ribs" has been changed to "pork." There were legitimate concerns that some teams would not have enough time to get their ribs cooked, so the change was made. Now, any cut of pork can be used. Originally, the plan was to have turn in times later in the day, but a baseball game is being held at the stadium that night and we needed to have the turn in times earlier.

Currently, the event has seven paid teams. It is just over a month away. We hope some of you will consider coming and cooking this contest. The organizers have pledged $2,500 in prize money, and all of the revenue generated from this event go to charity.

Good call! That makes it a lot easier for teams that don't want to show up at 7AM and cook ribs!

No Long Island love for this comp? There is a ferry that leaves Orient Point that will bring you right into New London, CT. That's under 1/2 hour from the contest site.

God Forbid a Long Island team leaves the island to do a contest :rolleyes::rolleyes:

To my fellow Long Islanders:

It for a good cause

Its a short ferry ride away and you can go to the casino afterwards

Its only $100 entry

Its $2500 prize money!!!! Hellloooooo?

Also, for the Chef's Choice category the NEBS Open Garnish rules are in effect! Nothing confusing at all. Just no desserts. Put something in the box and it will be judged.

OPEN GARNISH - Anything goes. Chefs Choice or Dessert must use Open
Garnish. Stuffing, wrapping, skewers, and decorations of any kind edible or not
are allowed. Any size chunks or ingredients can be used. Cooks should remember
the judges will be instructed to evaluate how well the cook has represented the
contest category. Excessive garnish or additional ingredients, that cover or hide
the appearance and/or taste of the defined category, may result in a lower score
