Some have been using turkey fryer gauges from Walmart type stores so they can read center temp. I use round stem gauges. Sure you read that in the UDS thread.... atleast 635 times. I go 1" below grate as standard and if i feel rich I put one in Weber lid. Spicewine gauges are good or check e-bay. Get one you can recalibrate.

I have Tel-Tru temperature gages in my cooker. +/-5 deg F and they can be adjusted. They aren't cheap but they will last and they are excellent quality. http://www.teltru.com/

Count me in with the turkey fryer thermometer guys. It sticks almost all the way to the middle of the grate and just below. I put it in a pot of boiling water and it was consistent with my digital thermo as well. less than $10 at wal-mart (evil place)

I have also bought guages form River Country, and like them very much. Large faces that are easy to read, and the are calibratable.
