Judging chicken???
Recent discussion brought up the question of parsley sticking to chicken entries--while some were mentioning the hassle of cleaning parsley off the yard bird b4 sampling some mentioned that since the cook presented it with parsley it should be tasted with the same - - what do you think???

Granted parsley sticks to chicken the most, but it does stick to the other meats as well. So I guess they should judge all the meats with a bite of parsley. And if that is in fact the case they should judge it with green leaf lettuce if that in the garnish of choice or cilantro.

If there are judges biting into any sample with parsley stuck to it, then that is taking the "as presented" rule way too seriously.
Take the stupid parsley off of the meat before you bite it people :what: |

Judges instruction. Remove any parsley before sampling.

If you purposely eat the parsley when sampling any entry, you're obviously not looking for a good bite of BBQ.

I was talking to a fellow competitor last weekend who is also a CBJ. I kind of thought it was a common sense thing. I'd sure hate to be scored down because some judge thought my chicken tasted like parsley!

I haven't heard that in judging classes i've attended but I would think it's plain common sense you don't try a sample with parsley or lettuce on it. It's garnish for crying out load.
However, we are also taught, if it's in the box we must try it the way the cook presents it. IE: if the cook decides not to put greens in the box and chops chicken to place his/her chicken thighs on to, then that chopped chicken must me sampled as well. That is a situation where the "garnish" is sampled. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Is there really some new epidemic where the judges are eating the garnish or are people just trolling here and taking devils advocate a little far . And anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

to clarify the the conversation abit--we were sitting around a late nite fire when the subject came up and this individuals real 'rant' was about the sticky sauces that are showing up more and more on chicken and dragging lots of the garninsh to the judging plate--it does become a hassle at times--well not really for me 'cause I just lick it off before tasting<bfg>

It's a meat contest. Haven't seen anyone eating the parsley WITH the entry. Lots of us clean the palate with it after along with cracker and water.
Some of the chicken is gettting soooo sticky I think the would pass the noodle test and stick to the wall if thrown at it. Hmm new judging parameter?
