The steaks were 2' thick and cooked for about 5-6 minutes on each side. They turned out to be quite rare, which is good, not bloody but still very rare. If I would have wrapped them for resting they probably would have been absolutely perfect. I would recommend 1 1/2" thick steaks if you have to have your meat more on the medium side.

I did use the lid a couple times to control the heat.

Dont attempt this without long tongs and welding gloves!

KC

When cooking in mother natures kitchen youll sometimes get more than you expected!

I dident get any noticeable ash but if you do get some it can be brushed off easily. I did have some charcoal stick to the meat but it comes right off.

The steaks were so good you would never notice any ash anyways.

Check out this video Raichlen made.

Outstanding!
This is also the best way to cook flank steak for Fajitas.

This was my first time doing it cave man style(keep it out of the wood pile guys) and I have to say it turned out better than I anticipated for my first goround. I wont recommend buying $75 worth of meat to do it but if you watch the video you can learn how to do it and not have it go south on you.

Only use one layer of charcoal and use the kettle lid to control the heat.
