pellet grills at competitions
I'm fairly new to the smoking hobby. I've noticed at competitions that pellet grills that use electricity, electronically controlled temperature adjustments/controls are allowed but that an electric smoker like a cookshack Amerique is not. What is the rationale and has there ever been a movement to allow electric smokers. Not advocating, just curious. Thanks.

The heat source must be from wood. Pellet cookers use electricity for initial start up, but once lit, the pellets provide all the heat and smoke.
Great debates over whether electric or gas powered cookers should be allowed. Purists say they should not and others say if they can produce good que, bring it on. There is no clear consensus. But most sanctioning bodies draw the line at pellet poopers. Non-sanctioned events often allow anything.

Electronic controls are also legal for charcoal smokers, so there really isn't too much difference between a pellet smoker and a charcoal cooker with a draft control on it - especially since some charcoal cookers can even reload their own fuel. (e.g. Stumps)
The heat source is where the sanctioning bodies draw the line.
