So the World Food Championships (Las Vegas) have posted their dates as Oct 31-Nov 3. Those are essentially the same dates (Oct 31-Nov 2) as Smoke on the Water's USA BBQ Championship at the Riverside Casino (Laughlin).

Doesn't this seem like an unnecessary conflict, especially considering the overlap in potential competitors? Which one would you go to?

Ya I wish the USA championship would change the date, since I have a catering job that day anyways

Actually, the WFC occurred last year on basically the same dates as this year and they also announced that they would be back this year. Maybe Ron should have looked at what was going on prior to his decision. He'll get competitors but maybe not the caliber that he expected.

Actually which sounds better: Dear, lets go to Las Vegas for our vacation or Dear, Lets go to Laughlin for our vacation?

with a $100,000 purse in laughlin, i don't think the quality of competitors will be an issue.

With free entry and hotel I would bet all of the TOY leaders will be in Laughlin.

Yep this is a no brainer for us..Hmm let's see GC is a truck with 100,000 payout and KCBS points Vs chance for 10,000,no points, turn ins drug out over two days and an almost zero chance to win the whole thing..SOTW all the way.

Where is this posted?? Looked at the KCBS website and nothing of interest is there. Do we take Ronnies word that he has the big bucks? Hopefully he will have a NV business license by then!

Actually, I was looking at doing this one because of the money. Just doing a bit of looking and really did not find anything on verifiable web sites. So do the judges, cooks and guarantees come from facebook? Did facebook do the one cancelled at the end of the month as well? Man, anything can be said on facebook but! I need a bit more than this to invest money and time.

Thom I am at business dinner.

Can somebody reply that Ronnie's word is Golden.
We have produced two $100,000 events one $125,00 events and multiple $50,000 events. We had one bad experience and have never canceled an event before. In fact, at Michigan during a NASCAR event I went in knowing I was going to lose $50,000 but against everybody's advice I did not cancel. We have not sanctioned the event because I'm producing several. $350 for each adds up. We pick and choose when it's time to spend that money.

Thanks for your interest

Ron Cates

We are going to Laughlin as well! We cooked the WFC last year...not our idea of what a bbq competition is all about.

I want to thank Ron and every organizer out there. I am hoping to make in to Laughlin. Yeah I want a shot at winning big.

My hope is the schedule can be worked out so cooking BOTH is a available option

We also hope that things get worked out to where we can cook both as we are fortunate enough to have already qualified for the WFC and we like to cook as many SOTW events as possible especially with the $100k payout.

As far as the shots taken at Ronnie and the Cates family, I personally think that they are very off base. I don't see many contest organizers spending the time and resources to put the planning and logistics in place to run these type of world class events multiple times a year. Ronnie is the first and only one to bring these type of payouts to the BBQ world on a consistent basis. In the event management business....SH*T happens. Haven't you never heard of a concert or conference being cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. As soon as they knew of the issue, they owned it, cancelled it and returned everyone's money. Seems pretty much on the up and up to me. In the future, why not judge a person's whole body of work before taking one incident and tearing at their credibility!

To clarify, Smoke on the Water did not cancel Silverton. They did. We do not post anything until we have an executed contract, which we had back in January.

This is all new to us. We have given away over a million dollars since our first competition and have never canceled an event. Nobody has ever questioned our integrity.

The USA Barbecue Championship is at Don Laughlin's Riverside Resort November 1 - 2. You do not need a Nevada business license to promote. This will be our fifth event in the state without a license. For whatever reason, the Silverton decided we needed a license two weeks before the event and it takes 45 days to process the paperwork.

As far as the WFC goes, we do our homework. I personally spoke with the organizers and we both decided our dates do not conflict. In fact, the barbecue for WFC is over on Thursday. Teams will have the option and convenience of just traveling an hour from Vegas to compete at the USA Barbecue Championship. That and the fact after an extensive survey of teams, we found the WFC format does not appeal to the majority of them. Que is all we do! So the date was never an issue with us.

The 2014 Silverado Twin Cab Pickup Truck is being donated by our presenting sponsor, Findlay Motors, which is located across the river in Bullhead City, AZ.

The USA Barbecue Championship will be sanctioned next month. We promote several events and are well known in the barbecue world. As a business, we are like everybody else, we want to hold onto our money as long as we can. $350 to sanction an event that does not take place until November 11 months out is not necessary. That's why you do not see the event on the KCBS website. Our Facebook page along with our website has been sufficient for making announcements before the sanctioning process is completed.

If anybody ever has questions about an event, please feel free to contact me at anytime. Our website is www.smokeonthewaterbbq.com and includes all the contact information you need to reach me. We are very easy to get in touch with and you can get the word straight from the horses mouth instead of reading gossip on a forum.

We appreciate all the teams out there and have tried to grow this sport to have big pay days for all the effort and expense those that compete go through. Good luck to everybody on the barbecue trail and hope to see you all in Laughlin.

My biggest complaint about Ronnie and SOTW is they don't do anything here in the Northeast........( and since things get distorted on the net, please understand that was a joke)
still working on the courage to see if the wife would like to spend our anniversary in Laughlin this year! Sounds like another great Smoke On The Water event.
