The same guy is still selling (allegedly) used 304 stainless steel drums for only $150 each.

You guys helped me before with the idea of using a grinder to take off the permanent lid. But I have a question. Wouldn't I just want to keep it on, invert it, cut out the bottom of the drum and have a stainless steel drum that a weber 22.5 kettle lid would fit perfectly on without further modifications?

I am already thinking about a 22.5 uds now lol.

I'd just buy a wsm 22.5 for what it would take to convert those.
 Heck $150 drum and even a $140 Big Poppa Smoker Kit is $110 cheaper than a WSM and it'd be a bad A smoker that also grills and sears. I'd take that over a WSM all day long and twice on Tuesdays!

Geek i'd just play it by ear and dry fit a Weber lid to the bottom. If not the flat lid route is all good. Personally i prefer 1 level cooking to two. A good stainless drum would look good with a BPS kit...really good

Only reason i say it would be cheaper is that there have been 3 in the past month for less than 300 here in dallas.

Thing is I am a penny pincher and I know the wsm 18.5 isn't airtight cause of the door, and it'd be hard to snuff out the fire compared to the UDS. The UDS saves every bit of fuel possible for me :) I use lump charcoal not kingsford. I really don't care for my hasty bake because it isn't airtight either.

Got ya….the doors are a factor. We have one and it doesn't seem to be an issue, but i spent some time shaping the door. I free for what you want a larger uds is aces.

Plus and it's a BIG plus is that you can grill and sear very easily on a properly done UDS or Big Poppa drum. Still price being equal i'd go a Big Poppa drum over a WSM easily.
